The New Westminster Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a variety of perspectives to help guide future approaches for sharing parks and open spaces with people and their dogs. This work will help the City develop strategies to guide approaches for sharing of parks and open spaces for variety of uses.
The City are currently seeking 1-2 interested members from each of the City’s Residents’ Associations to form an Advisory Group to work with City staff in developing a policy and long-term plan (10 years+) that integrates safe and comfortable places for dogs and people in our parks and open spaces . Input from the Advisory Group will be considered in conjunction with additional community engagement activities i.e. public open houses, pop-up events and online surveys.
Selected Group members are expected to attend two evening workshops (time and date to be determined) with City staff and the consultant team.
Ideally, the Advisory Group will have a broad representation of city-wide interests and perspectives to ensure a balanced approach to developing a strategy for harmonizing dogs and people in our network of parks and open spaces. Members will represent a diverse range of stakeholder groups including, but not limited to:
- Dog owners and non-dog owners (including dog walkers/ trainers)
- Animal health and welfare
- Cyclists and cycling commuters
- Park users (including sports and athletics)
- Persons with lived experience of disabilities
- Schools adjacent to parks
Advisory Group Composition and Selection
The Advisory Group will include 10-12 members and will selected with the goal of diverse representation.
